Events and media / Global news metadata

GDELT global news mentions matching Tbilisi

GDELT DOC 2.0 can search worldwide monitored news for Tbilisi and return article-level metadata in JSON. A one-week query returned five representative articles in Chinese, English, Armenian and Russian, including Tbilisi flooding and a municipal demolition decision. Records contain URL, optional mobile URL and social image, title, first-seen timestamp, publisher domain, detected article language and source-country label. This is media-monitoring metadata, not verified event ground truth or a geocoded Tbilisi-event table.

01

Provenance and access

How the data is reached

Unauthenticated JSON API with query, mode, maximum records, timespan or explicit timestamps. First rapid request returned HTTP 429 with an instruction to limit calls to one every five seconds; a delayed retry returned JSON.

Reuse status

GDELT data/metadata are provided for open use, but linked article text, titles and social images remain subject to publisher copyright and terms. Store links and metadata, not copied articles.

Boundaries

Reliability, caveats, and privacy

What held up

  • Delayed retry returned current multilingual article records
  • Machine-readable first-seen timestamp and domain support deduplication
  • Explicit query/time window makes retrieval reproducible

What can go wrong

  • Keyword match can refer to Tbilisi without describing an event located there
  • sourcecountry is outlet origin, not article subject location
  • Duplicate/syndicated stories and machine translation occur
  • Article and image copyrights remain with publishers
  • API enforces throttling and returned 429 during validation
  • News claims need source verification

Privacy boundary

  • News may name individuals; avoid republishing personal details or treating mentions as verified allegations
